British Values

At Our Lady of the Rosary, we actively promote the Fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

British Values are taught explicitly through our weekly Personal Development lessons and are also promoted throughout school life. We provide our pupils with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to become respectful, responsible and active members of their community and wider society.

The British Values are as follows:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance of those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

Why do we teach British Values?

We want our pupils to:

  • develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;
  • understand the difference between right and wrong and the importance of rules and laws;
  • take responsibility for their behaviour and understand how they can make a positive contribution to their school, local community and wider society;
  • develop respect for public institutions and services;
  • appreciate and respect their own and other cultures, faiths and beliefs;
  • show respect and consideration for others;
  • understand the importance of democracy and participate positively in democratic processes.

How do we promote British Values?

British Values are woven throughout our school life. Pupils have opportunities to:

  • participate in School Council elections and develop an understanding of democracy;
  • share their views and ideas and understand that their voice matters;
  • take responsibility for their behaviour and understand why rules are important;
  • develop independence, confidence and responsibility through age-appropriate choices;
  • learn about different faiths, cultures and beliefs through our curriculum;
  • celebrate diversity and develop respect and understanding for others;
  • take part in charitable activities, community projects and opportunities to make a positive contribution to society.

We believe that British Values are not simply something pupils learn about; they are modelled, discussed and lived out every day across our school community.

Celebrating Our Understanding

At Our Lady of the Rosary, we enjoy bringing our school community together through our Family Friday events. Throughout the year, we hold Family Fridays with different themes, providing opportunities for pupils, staff and families to learn, celebrate and work together.

Several of our Family Fridays have focused specifically on British Values, including our Spring 1 event. Every child took part in activities exploring a range of religions, faiths and beliefs. The morning provided opportunities for pupils and families to learn together, ask questions, celebrate diversity and develop greater respect and understanding of others.

Our Family Friday events are an important part of how we bring our values to life beyond the classroom. They help us to build a strong sense of community and provide meaningful opportunities for our pupils to develop respect, tolerance, responsibility and an appreciation of diversity.

We are proud of the way our pupils, families and staff come together to celebrate our shared values and contribute positively to our school community.
