History

The children have spent time reflecting on their knowledge of the Anglo-Saxons. As part of this, the children enjoyed watching a livestream from the Jorvik Viking Centre in York, which looked at the different artefacts and highlighted what it told us about Anglo-Saxon life.

Science- Working Scientifically

In their most recent science topic- animals and humans- the children have been exploring how we grow from a baby through to old age. As part of this, they measured the growth of a child and recorded the length of a forearm from children in nursery up to year 5. The children continued their learning by displaying this data in a bar chart. They identified a bar chart as the most appropriate, as the data collected was discrete.

The Anglo-Saxons

In history we have been looking at the Anglo-Saxons and how Britain changed during this period of time. As part of their writing cycle on Non-Chronological reports, the children wrote a hot task about Anglo-Saxon life. Once edited, the children rewrote this and added pictures linked to this.

Decider Skills

Over the past few weeks, the children in year 5 have been working with the decider skills where they have been looking at their different emotions and what strategies they can use to control these emotions. The new skills include; stop, it will pass right now, name the emotion, opposite action, self care and fact or opinion. The children often refer to their emotions as a fizz and use the skills to stop the fizz from erupting.

MacMillan Coffee morning and cake sale – Profit and Loss.

As part of our Personal development lesson, we planned to make flapjacks to contribute to the fundraising event and to develop our money sense skills. We focused on profit and loss; learning about how businesses must consider overhead costs,

when trying to make a profit. We calculated how much the ingredients would cost and decided on a price for our flap jacks to ensure we would make a profit for charity. We then baked the flap jacks and sold them at the MacMillan coffee morning and cakes sale.
