Year 4

Year 4 2023 – 2024

Taste Testing Pasta Sauce

As part of our DT module cooking and nutrition, Year 4 have been tasked with the job of creating their own tomato-based pasta sauce. We were lucky enough to enjoy a taste session. In this session we tasted 4 different pasta sauces, tomato and basil, creamy tomato, passata and tomato and garlic. We had very mixed reviews! After learning about the meaning of ‘seasonal’, we also tasted a range of seasonal vegetables from radishes to spring onions. We look forward to creating our own pasta sauce!

Visit to the Oriental Museum

After learning all about ancient Egypt in History, we had an amazing visit to the Oriental Museum in Durham. We began the day being archaeologists, we looked at a range of artefacts from the ancient Egyptian times. We drew some of the artefacts, described what they were made from and then guessed what they could have been used for. After this, we moved into the museum and carried out a museum hunt, we completed different challenges by finding out about a range of artefacts from statues of Egyptian Gods to hieroglyphs.

We were lucky enough to see a real-life mummy! We found out all about mummification and were amazed at how a body could be preserved for all those years.

To end our day we took part in a role play of the weighing of the heart ceremony. We mummified a pharaoh and then decided if the gods would accept our pharaoh into the afterlife or send them to the underworld!

Peterlee 75

During November, we have been taking part in a number of music workshops with Marty from the band ‘The Lake Poets’ as part of the Peterlee75 celebrations. The children in Year 4 helped Marty to write a song all about Peterlee, celebrating its creation 75 years ago. The children looked at photos of the town’s history and had the opportunity to discuss how it has changed over time.

We were lucky enough to be invited to East Durham College to perform our song to an audience in the theatre. The children experienced a real show rehearsal and watched a number of local artists perform their own songs. We had a brilliant evening and it was extra special being able to perform in front of our family members.

Cooking

Year 4 have had an amazing afternoon cooking pasta sauce. We were lucky enough to work with a professional chef who taught us how to prepare, make and cook two different pasta sauces with hidden vegetables. We made one with peppers and carrots and another with courgettes and celery. The favourite was the sauce with carrots and peppers.

Coronation

Today we have the most amazing time celebrating the Kings coronation. We first received our invitation and wrote thank you letters to King Charles for having us! We made sure to give him plenty advice about how he should rule over the United Kingdom. We then created our very own portraits of him and went for our lunch time picnic. To finish of our day we have had the best party celebrating with all our friends. The rain couldn’t stop us.

Art

In Art we are making sculptures using clay. This week we investigated how to make different textures using different objects that were available in the classroom.

Mosque Trip

The children had a lovely time at the mosque today. We were able to observe a prayer time and have a tour of the mosque. We were able to ask questions and learnt the similarities between Christianity and Islam. The children learnt that Jesus is mentioned in the Quran and is one of Islam’s prophets. The children were respectful during prayer time and were keen to know more. The Imam was so impressed, the children even got a treat.

Family Friday

The children have had such an amazing Friday morning with all their families. The children have been learning about Eid – Al-Fitr and were able to share this knowledge in the assembly with all the families present. They were so confident and made sure to tell everyone about our task.

They are so excited to continue their learning about Islam with a visit to the Mosque in a couple of weeks time. Keep and eye out for those photos!

Year 4 had a great time visiting the Hancock Museum. The children really enjoyed exploring the museum, looking at fossils and artefacts from the Ice Age to the Stone Age. They even saw a mummified person from Ancient Egypt. In a workshop they learnt about the hierarchy of Ancient Egypt and discussed different jobs and which was the most important.
